Your Summer Planning Essentials TeacherVision Advisory Board Member, Jeanne, outlines summer planning essentials, and shares her tips for what you need to start planning over the summer, and what can wait until school starts. by Jeanne Wolz So. You’re hired. You know what content(s) and grade level(s) you’re teaching, and all you want to do is get started with planning. But what should you start with? And how much should you do before meeting with colleagues or meeting your kids? You are right to be wary of planning too much before getting acquainted with your kids, and especially right if you haven’t had a chance to talk to anyone about curriculum or guidelines you’ll be expected to follow. Let’s talk about what is smart to start planning over the summer--and what is smarter to wait on. First, Do Your Homework Talk to your principal and ask what curriculum and/or standards you’ll be expected to follow, as well as any behavior or discipline policies you’ll be expected to enforce. While they’ll likely have information on discipline, they may not have detailed information on curriculum, in which case ask for contact information of a department chair or teacher counterpart that you can ask. The last thing you want to do is write your curriculum this summer only to find out you have to throw it all out.   Develop Your Classroom Management Plan While you’re waiting for answers, focus on planning your classroom management plan. In the summer before your first year, classroom management is incredibly important.  It’s the key to keeping your sanity intact while having the freedom to do all the awesome, life-changing lessons you’ve been dreaming about this year. And it will save you a lot of stress down the road.   Your classroom management plan should have plans for things like procedures (How should students sharpen their pencil? Ask to go to the bathroom? Turn in their homework?), routines (what will happen in a typical class period?), discipline plan (what are the non-negotiable rules? What happens if kids break them?), policies (do you accept late work? What about tardies?), your family communication systems (how will you contact home, and how often?), and rewards and incentives (how will you celebrate and reward awesome work?). Feeling lost? You will also find helpful tips and strategies in our e-book, 5 Tips To Master Classroom Management.   Plan your Year Overview While it’s not very useful to plan your entire year day-by-day before meeting and getting to know your students (thank goodness because how overwhelming would that be?), having a solid curriculum overview for your year can save you a lot of head-aches down the road. Many districts provide this for you, but if they don’t, they aren’t too complicated to put together: Just sit down, pull out your school calendar and any other information you have about what you’re expected to teach.   Count the days/weeks you’ll have students during the year.   Then list out all of your standards or learning objectives in a spreadsheet. Start brainstorming units that can cover those standards along the top.   Then, mark which standards you’ll cover in each unit.   Estimate the number of weeks you’ll need for each unit Cross-check that with the days you’ll have students ...and voila, you have a year overview! Plan your First Two Weeks After you’ve established what your first unit will be as well as your classroom management plan, you’ve got yourself a list of things to teach during your first two weeks. While I don’t recommend planning anything in detail much farther out than two weeks, having two weeks of plans to help you get to know your students, teach your classroom management plan, and pre-assess their skills will be very useful.   Plan your Classroomâ€"and Keep it Simple I’m here to let you off the hook. Here’s the deal: your students kids are going to love you and learn a ton this year because of you and your incredible lesson plans, not because of your polka-dot classroom theme. Besides, wouldn’t it be awesome to have them help you design and decorate your classroom over the first couple weeks? And it’s a great way to get to know your students. So while all of those Pinterest-perfect classroom set-ups are tempting, let them go this year--especially if you’re in your first few years. Concentrate on thinking about where students will sit, how they’ll move about the room, how your paper flow will work, and what you need on your walls to have a functional classroom, as well as finding killer deals on school supplies (you will literally never have enough pencils for the rest of your life). Leave the rest of the classroom decorating for students to make their own. And that’s it! That’s what I recommend planning before you begin. The more you can make 4 things solid, the stronger your foundation will be for an amazing year this year. Try your best to let go of the rest--you’ll have plenty of time this year to continue to make your classroom your own. For now, focus on the most important, and give yourself plenty of rest. How to Ask Your Parents for Money in College

Asking your parents for money while youre a college student is never easy -- or comfortable. Sometimes, however, the costs and expenses of college are more than you can handle. If youre in a situation where you need to ask your parents (or grandparents, or whomever) for some financial help while in school, these  suggestions should help make the situation a little easier. 6 Tips for Asking for Financial Help Be honest. This is probably the most important. If you lie and say you need money for rent but dont use the money for rent, what are you going to do when you really do need money for rent in a few weeks? Be honest about why you are asking. Are you in an emergency? Do you want a little money for something fun? Have you totally mismanaged your money and run out before the semester ended? Is there a great opportunity you dont want to miss but cant afford?Put yourself in their shoes. Most likely, you know how they are going to react. Will they be worried about you because you had a car accident and need money to fix your car so you can continue to drive to school? Or furious because you  blew your entire semesters loan check within the first few weeks of school? Put yourself in their situation and try to imagine what theyll be thinking -- and open to -- when you finally ask. Knowing what to expect will help you know how to prepare.Know if youre asking for a gift or a loan. You know you need money. But do you know if you are going to be able to pay them back? If you aim to  reimburse them, let them know how youll do so. If not, be honest about that, too.Be grateful for the help youve already received. Your parents may be angels or -- well -- not. But, most likely, they have sacrificed something -- money, time, their own luxuries, energy -- to make sure you made it to school (and can stay there). Be grateful for what theyve done already. And if they cant give you money but can offer other support, be grateful for that, too. They may be doing the best they can, just like you.Think about how to avoid your situation again. Your parents may be hesitant to give you money if they think youre going to be in the same situation next month or next semester. Think about how you got in your current predicament and what you can do to avoid a repeat -- and let your parents know your plan of action for doing so.Explore other options if possible. Your parents may want to give yo u money and help out, but it just may not be a possibility. Think about what other options you have, from an on-campus job to an emergency loan from the financial aid office, that can help. Your parents will appreciate knowing that youve looked into other sources besides them.

Is There a Real Difference Between a Neurosis and a Psychosis A major part of clinical psychology is the diagnoses and treatment of mental disorders. This can often be difficult and controversial due to the fact that many of the disorders can be confused with others; there aren’t always clear guidelines in which to follow. An example of this confusion can be seen in the disorders Neurosis and Psychosis. Neither neurosis nor psychoses appear as major categories in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III). The main reason for this is that both categories were fairly broad and included a number of mental disorders with quite dissimilar symptoms. They are obsessed by the thought that it is unlucky. Some people feel compelled to throw spilt salt over their shoulders. The obsessions and compulsions take many different forms. The patient knows that they are unreasonable but are unable to control them. The one thing all of the above disorders have in common is that all arise from external factors. So a neurosis occurs when the mind is affected by factors arising in the environment. A psychosis however, differs in that it is a mental illness arising in the mind itself. The psychosis can be divided into those in which physical disease plays a major part and those in which it does not. These subdivisions are called organic psychosis and functional psychosis. Dementia and Infective-exhaustive psychosis are the main organic psychoses. The main functional psychoses are Schizophrenia and Manic-depressive psychosis. Women have taken part in the corporate world, and have contributed a great deal in all fields of societal concerns with them being members of the senate or cause-oriented organizations. Although, racism and gender inequality is still present in society, the prevalence of multiculturalism and the acknowledgement of females is slowly changing society’s take on these issues. Obama and Clinton are strengthening the views on race and gender issues, simply because they are able to reach the point of holding an important place where people depend their future on. The people, especially democrats, look to the two party candidates, and weigh their importance in battling the Republican-Democratic race to the presidential seat. Suddenly, their views become important. Suddenly, their concerns are being heard. Suddenly, all the issues about being black or female are interest over society. There are two sides of the story, however. As race and gender consciousness elevates with the presence of Obama and Clinton in the media, people who hold traditional views are also voicing out their opinions about the issue. Perhaps, the world will not run out of people who believe in ethnocentrism and patriarchy, and the world will not run out of people who believe in race and gender equality. Since the side of ethnocentrism and patriarchy has been ringing all over the world for centuries, it has become too old for people to pay attention to their side. Although Obama and Clinton are competing for the Democratic primary, still, they remain to be icons of justice and equality. Looking at them battle it out for the one of the most important positions in the world is empowering people, especially those who belong to the minority groups. Black people believe in themselves by looking at Obama. Obama has become an image of change and inspiration for them to step up and have a say about the issues in society. Other people see failure if Obama wins the Democrat primary, saying America is not yet ready for a black president. At the same time, the black community wields all the support and inspiration they can get in order to show the world the change it is waiting for. The female population is on the same side, looking at Hillary Clinton vie for the presidential elections. Looking at how Hillary Clinton have become even with her success as first lady, and eventually a senator. On the extreme side of things, the presence of Obama and Clinton eliminates all issues behind race and gender. Their involvement with politics, especially with the presidential race, is not a matter of whether they are black or white, male or female. It is a matter of what they can do if they become the president of the United States. Through this, the person in Obama and Clinton, or McCain for that matter becomes more important than culture, gender, or any other superficial issues that society used to look upon. Why did Rome fall?There was not any single cause to the fall of Rome. It was many thingsoccurring in succession to each other. After the Punic wars with Carthage, Romeacquired many new lands that it did not have before. During peace timesit was easy to govern these areas but during war times it proved difficult. The government had to pay soldiers to patrol the frontiers of the empire;it could no longer rely on the loot to serve as the pay for the soldiers. This took a significant amount of money out of the Roman treasury. Someemperors wanted to save money and made the army too small to have controlover such a large empire. The economy of Rome was also suffering. Rome was importing goods from its colonies but wasnt exporting nearlyas much. This created an imbalance of trade. The colonies were creatingtheir own finished goods and no longer relied on Rome for them. New coinswere then made out of lead and gold to devalue the currency. Merchantsnow charged more money because these new coins were not worth as much asthe old ones. This created inflation, this problem plagued the empire untilits fall. The problem of succession also contributedto the fall of Rome. There was never a set system of succession. Afterthe death of an emperor, generals competed with each other for power. Oncesomeone gained power they didnt rule for long; someone often assassinatedthem. This weakened the authority of Rome; corruption was common and lawwas almost non-existent. Diocletian tried to make reforms to makethe empire as strong as it was before. He realized that the empire wastoo large for one person to govern, he split the empire in half and tookcontrol of eastern part himself. He then appointed a co-emperor to rulein the west. He also reorganized the problems in the civil service andmade them responsible directly to the emperor. He increased the size ofthe army and trained them better. To improve the economic health of theempire, Diocletian set limits on prices and wages to slow down inflation. To give some stability in agriculture and manufacturing, he ordered peopleto stay in their jobs. There was no room for promotion. Diocletian diedin 305 A.D. In 324 A.D. Constantine took over as emperor. He reunited the east and west under his own rule. He also built a new capitalat Byzantium, on the Bosporus. He named this city Constantinople. Constantinewanted a new capital that would be a Christian city, not a pagan one. Hecontinued the policies of Diocletian. People saw no need to work hard withno chance of getting ahead. These reforms only slowed down the processof collapse. After Constantines death in 337 A.D., the empire was againdivided. To the north of the Rhine and Danube rivers,lived a group of people known as the German tribes. They were herders andfarmers who had migrated from Scandinavia. As their population grew, theybegan to look for new land. They decided that moving into the Roman Empirewas a good idea. The Roman army was spread thin and could barely cope withthe Germans. In the fourth century, the Huns, a nomadic people from centralAsia, began attacking the German tribes. Thus the tribes looked for protectionfrom the Huns in the Empire. They received permission from the Emperorto live in the Empire. A couple of years later the Romans sent an armyto defeat the Germans and failed to defeat them. This proved that Romewas not invincible. The Germans continued to sack the west; they invadedItaly and sacked Rome. Rome bought peace by giving the Germans most ofGaul and Spain. The Huns then marched into Rome and they were soundly defeatedby Rome and its German allies. 8 Places to Practice Italian in Italy You’ve taken all the community classes your town has to offer, chat with a language partner whenever you can, and listen to Italian music while you drive. Now you’re ready to go to Italy and put all of your hard work into practice. What’s more, you’ve been to the bigger, touristy cities, like Florence, Assisi, and Pisa, which were all lovely, but you want to experience a side of Italy that’s less populated by tour groups and their flags. You want to spend time in a town where very few people speak English or where they’re more willing to play along with you as you figure out this Italian-language thing that you’ve come to love. If that’s you, I’ve put together a short list for you of eight places to visit in Italy if you want to practice your Italian. Of course, there are thousands of towns, large and small, that I could have listed, and no matter where you go, you may still encounter the niece of the proprietor who spent her summer in London and wants to practice her English. I can’t promise you a 100% English-free experience, but I can give you a fighting chance to avoid being â€Å"English-ed.† 8 Places to Visit in Italy If You Want to Practice Italian Northern Italy 1. Bergamo Bergamo is a city (just over 115k in population) in northern Italy that’s around 45 minutes away from Milan by car. While it has a decent-sized expat community, you’ll find less American influence and more Germanic influence. Past visitors recommend taking a walk at Citt Alta (accessible both by way of the funicolare and walking), visiting Castello di Vigilio, and of course, il Duomo. If you’re looking to try a traditional dish, the recommended one is casonsei alla bergamesca, also called casoncelli alla bergamesca.   2.  Reggio Emilia With just over 163k people, Reggio Emilia is well-populated, but don’t let that fool you. I’ve been assured that there are plenty of opportunities to practice your Italian while also learning how to be buone forchette (good forks- those who eat plenty and well). If you have a full day at your disposal, start new conversations while you gawk at Santiago Calatrava bridges from the station, after having walked quietly through il Tempio della Beata Vergine della Ghiara, and as you lounge in Piazza Prampolini (also called Piazza Grande). Oh, and make sure to try l’erbazzone, a type of pot pie made with simple ingredients that’s famous in the region. Ferrara At just over 359k, Ferrara is no small town, but just like Reggio Emilia, there are numerous chances to stretch your Italian to its limits. If you want to hang out with the farreresi, take a passeggiata along le mura  (the walls), eat il pasticcio di maccheroni (and about 47 other nap-inducing dishes), and then ask for directions to Via delle Volte, a characteristic alleyway of the city. Volterra At just over 10.5k residents, Volterra is the third smallest of the places to visit in Italy to practice your Italian. This borgo in Tuscany has Etruscan origins and yep, it was used as the setting for the second Twilight movie (which, to be accurate, was actually filmed in Montepulciano- a town that made the honorable mentions list down below). If you happen to find yourself in Volterra (whether you came hoping to live the magic of New Moon or not- seriously, no judgment), here are a few suggestions for making sure you open your mouth to speak- and eat, of course. First, to start the day off on a ultra positive note, chat about the devices used while browsing il Museo della Tortura, have some cinghiale alla volterrana for lunch, and then hang out in a local bar with the intention to start as many conversations as possible about calcio.    2. Montefalco You’ll find the tiny town (just over 5.6k in population) in Umbria- one of, I might add, my favorite regions in Italy full of green rolling hills and truffles†¦ but I digress. After visiting the main piazza, buy some pan mostato from a nearby panificio, do a tasting of the Sagrantino di Montefalco, and then check out one of the many pathways that hold the same name. Nearby you can also visit  Spello and Bevagna. 3. Viterbo While Viterbo- the city, not the province- does have some beautiful attractions, like Palazzo Papale and Le Terme, which are hot springs, the real beauty of this city in the Lazio region is in its ordinariness. While there is a university with plenty of international students and an exchange program for Americans, the majority of the people who live there don’t speak English. If you’re hanging out there for the day, go straight from the train station to Pizza DJ and grab a slice of the freshest pizza that you can get. Then, take a walk down the corso, stop in a bar and start a conversation with whoever looks friendly. Before settling down for dinner at either the pizzeria Il Labirinto or pasta at La Spaghetteria- famous for having over 300 types of saucespop in and out of the bookshops or grab a gelato from L’antica Latteria. Besides having a mythologically-based namethe monster that was transformed by Circeit’s characterized primarily by small alleyways that, when followed, lead directly to the sea and houses next to the water that look perpetually sleepy. Besides eating ridiculously fresh seafood on the terrace of a restaurant, the best way to spend your time here is by visiting il borgo di Chianalea, learning some Calabrian dialect from the locals at the bar, or take a dive and learn all kinds of marine-related vocabulary. 2. Lecce Our final place to visit is Lecce, in Puglia, with a population of just over 94k. You can start your day on the more touristy side by having un caffà ¨ at Caffà ¨ Alvino, right in front of the Anfiteatro, or you can seek out a more local place to start your giornata leccese. Then, take a walk at one of the many beaches, get your fill of museums, and then try some sagne torte, or Sagne ‘ncannulate in dialecta pasta dish.
